Why People Seek Therapy
People seek therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a specific difficulty they want to address; at other times, they may simply feel emotionally stuck, overwhelmed or unsure how to move forward.
Some of the difficulties people may experience include:
- Feeling unable to control certain behaviours
- Secrecy, shame or distress around addiction
- Relationship conflict or loss of trust
- Emotional overwhelm, anxiety or persistent stress
- Compulsive pornography use
- Low self-esteem and overthinking
- Difficulty coping with stress, loneliness or significant life changes
Therapy provides a confidential and non-judgemental space to better understand what is happening and begin working towards meaningful change.
My Therapeutic Approach
My therapeutic approach has been shaped by both professional training and personal life experience, which I believe has given me a deeper understanding of the complexities of relationships, behaviour and change.
I work collaboratively with each individual or couple, adapting therapy to their circumstances, concerns and goals. The aim is not simply to understand what is happening, but to help develop greater awareness, healthier ways of coping and practical strategies for change.
I believe therapy should feel supportive and safe, while also having direction and purpose.
What to Expect
The first stage of therapy involves gaining a clearer understanding of your situation, concerns, and goals through a thorough fact-finding assessment.
Sessions are collaborative, confidential and tailored to your individual needs. Depending on what you are experiencing, therapy may involve:
Understanding patterns
Exploring emotional and behavioural patterns and developing a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to difficulties.
Identifying triggers
Recognising triggers, coping mechanisms and behaviours that may be maintaining or contributing to a problem.
Exploring relationships
Looking at relationship dynamics, communication, intimacy, trust and other factors that may be affecting your relationships.
Developing strategies for change
Identifying practical ways to manage difficult emotions, behaviours and situations and work towards sustainable change.
Building emotional wellbeing
Developing greater emotional awareness, healthier coping strategies and improved emotional regulation.
My approach can involve both short-term and longer-term therapy, depending on your circumstances and what you hope to achieve.
For more information about my approach to therapy, you can also read Supporting Life Changes in the Resources section.
Taking the First Step
Seeking therapy can sometimes feel difficult, particularly when issues involve shame, uncertainty, compulsive behaviours or relationship difficulties.
You do not need to fully understand everything before getting in touch.
I offer a confidential and non-judgemental space where we can begin to understand what is happening and consider how meaningful change can be achieved.
If you are considering therapy, please contact me to arrange an initial appointment.
